FDNY 9/11 WTC Health Program
The FDNY WTC Health Program offers comprehensive care to firefighters and EMS personnel who responded to the 9/11 attacks. This program, developed under the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, ensures that eligible active and retired FDNY members receive lifetime medical monitoring and treatment.
You can access free annual medical exams through this program, designed to detect WTC-related conditions like respiratory diseases and cancers. All diagnostic procedures and treatments, including prescriptions, hospitalizations, and outpatient care for certified illnesses, come with no out-of-pocket costs. FDNY responders, who faced unparalleled exposure at Ground Zero, benefit significantly as these services address their heightened health risks.
If you’re located outside New York City, the Nationwide Provider Network connects you with specialists near your residence. This network enables you to receive high-quality care without the need to travel to New York. Whether you served at the World Trade Center, Shanksville, or Pentagon, the program ensures access to trusted medical providers nationwide.
Eligible FDNY responders also qualify for free, approved prescription medications with no copays, further enhancing the accessibility of treatment. These provisions reflect a commitment to safeguarding your long-term health, recognizing the critical role you played during the rescue and recovery efforts.
9/11 Victim Compensation Fund for Firefighters (FDNY)
The 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) provides financial compensation to individuals who suffered physical harm or were killed due to the September 11th attacks or related debris removal efforts. As a firefighter or first responder, you could be eligible for these funds if you were present in the Exposure Zone between September 11, 2001, and May 30, 2002.
Eligibility for the VCF includes responders who participated in rescue, recovery, debris cleanup, or other support activities at the World Trade Center site, Pentagon, or Shanksville crash site. Proof of presence during the specified time period is required, with documentation such as time sheets, department letters, or awards serving as verification. Alternative methods are available to validate eligibility if original records are unavailable.
The VCF, reauthorized under the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, ensures financial relief for certified illnesses linked to 9/11 exposures. Commonly compensated conditions include respiratory disorders, certified cancers like thyroid and melanoma, and mental health-related conditions. Compensation amounts vary depending on illness certifications and economic losses, ensuring tailored support based on individual cases.
