Understanding the WTC Health Program

The WTC Health Program delivers no-cost medical monitoring and treatment for those impacted by the September 11, 2001, attacks. It provides care for individuals diagnosed with certified WTC-related health conditions, such as respiratory illnesses, gastroesophageal disorders, and mental health issues like PTSD. The program also supports ongoing research into long-term health impacts of 9/11 exposures.

Eligible participants include responders to the attack sites in New York, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, as well as residents, workers, and school attendees in the New York City disaster area.

Enrollment and certification depend on meeting specific criteria, including activity, location, time period, and exposure hour minimums. Once enrolled, you gain access to tailored medical and mental health care services, ensuring timely and effective treatment.

This federally funded program, authorized until 2090, aims to address both immediate and long-term health needs of qualifying individuals.

9/11 Covered Health Conditions

The WTC Health Program addresses a wide range of certified health conditions directly linked to 9/11 exposures. These include physical illnesses and mental health issues that are thoroughly evaluated and treated at the listed clinics located across Queens & Manhattan, New York.

You can receive care for a variety of physical health conditions under the WTC Health Program. Certified respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and interstitial lung disease, as well as sinusitis and sleep apnea, are commonly treated. Digestive disorders including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and inflammatory issues linked to toxin exposure are also addressed. Additionally, certain cancers, like thyroid cancer, skin melanoma, and cancers of the head, neck, or reproductive system, qualify for treatment, as do rare conditions such as mesothelioma. Medical certification requires evidence that these conditions are significantly linked to 9/11-related exposures. Post-diagnosis, you can access treatment through the WTC Health Program.
Mental health conditions are a critical component of services offered through the WTC Health Program. Diagnosed disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder are prevalent among 9/11 survivors and responders. Additionally, conditions such as dysthymic disorder, panic disorder, and substance abuse are treated. If these mental health concerns are certified as WTC-related, you gain access to individualized mental health care. Clinics like the Manhattan William Street Clinic provide comprehensive assessments to ensure you receive tailored treatments.
